State of Health (SOH) is the measure of how much of a battery's original capacity and lifespan remains. As electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage keep growing, SOH is becoming essential data — for automakers, leasing companies, insurers, recyclers, and the used-EV-battery market.

This is no longer a future concern: the EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) has required battery management systems in EV and industrial batteries to keep readable SOH data since August 2024. From February 2027, every new EV, light-transport and industrial battery above 2 kWh will need a digital "battery passport", with up-to-date SOH data as a core component.
